I have a backlog of other storytime posts to get to, but I wanted to share the eclipse one while it is still relevant! My library is not in the path of totality, but we are getting over 99% coverage with the eclipse coming up on Monday. As such, a lot of the people in the area are very excited about the eclipse. I thought it was only fitting that I do a Sun and Moon themed storytime in celebration. I was even able to find one book that has an eclipse as a central part of the story: Sun & Moon: A Giant Love Story! The rest of the books are simply about the sun and moon. Books marked with a ~ were used for my toddler storytime and books marked with a * were used for my all ages storytime. I am finding that often my toddler storytime is pretty mellow and the all ages one tends to be much more high energy. Consequently, we usually read more books during the toddler one. I really wanted to read Red is a Dragon with my all ages group since it's a fun introduction to some things from Chinese culture in addition to being a book of colors, but it isn't a high energy book the way Monsters Love Colors is so I went with that one first. The all ages storytime was slow to start so we only had time to read one book with all the other activities I had planned.

Books marked with * are the ones I used in my storytime. Super Hair-o and the Barber of Doom was recommended in a post on the Storytime Underground Facebook Page. Finding superhero themed books with diverse characters is difficult. The majority of them are about white boys. This one, however, is abut a diverse group of friends and is a really fun read! Highly recommended!

I always select around six books for a storytime, but only end up using two or three. Books marked with * are the ones I ended up using for my storytime. Any theme I do will have a huge variety of potential books to fit it, so mine are only suggestions. I try to have as much diversity as possible in the characters in my book selection. It's important for kids to be exposed to people of all different races and ethnicities at an early age. For this selection both The Snowy Day and Snow feature people of color as the main characters.
