Books
Little Bird’s Bad Word by Jacob Grant
You Nest Here With Me by Jane Yolen
Cockatoo, too by Bethanie Deeney Murguia
Birds by Kevin Henkes
Froodle by Antoinette Portis
Hooray for Birds! by Lucy Cousins
Birds are a fun theme for storytime. There are a huge number of great children's books about birds and talking about birds is also a great opportunity to bring out the egg shakers. Hooray for Birds! was my favorite book of this selection with lots of opportunities for pretending to be different types of birds.

Songs and Rhymes
Action Song: “Shake your Egg”
(Tune: Do your Ears Hang Low)
Can you shake your egg up high?
Can you shake your egg down low?
Can you shake it side to side?
Can you shake it by your toe?
Can you shake it really fast?
Can you shake it really slow?
Can you shake your egg?

Action Song: “Little Bird”
(Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)
Little bird, little bird, fly around,
Up to the sky, down to the ground.
Little bird, little bird, flap your wings.
Open your beak and sweetly sing.
Little bird, little bird, fly to your nest.
Now it is time to take a rest.

Transition Rhyme: “Little Birds”
Little birds, little birds, jump up and down.
Little birds, little birds, don’t make a sound!
Little birds, little birds, tip-toe to me.
Little birds, little birds, bend your knees!
Little birds, little birds, peep, peep, peep.
Little birds, little birds, sleep, sleep, sleep.
Little birds, little birds, fly to the leaves!
Little birds, little birds, sit down, please.
Flannelboards and Fingerplays
Flannelboard: “Ten Fluffy Chickens”
Five eggs and five eggs
(Add a clutch of eggs each time you say “five eggs”)
And that makes ten
Sitting on top
(Add the hen)
Is Mother Hen
Cackle cackle cackle
(Clap hands as you say Cackle!)
What do I see?
Ten fluffy chicks
(Flip over each clutch of eggs.)
Yellow as can be.

When I did this storytime, the chicken flannelboard was the only bird themed one I had already so I went with that rather than spending time making a new one. Now, I have a number of other bird themed flannels I could choose from, like my parrot one and a penguin one that I will be posting soon. If you decide to do a bird theme, choose whichever bird flannel you like the best!
(Tune: Two Little Blackbirds)
Two little songbirds flying through the night.
One is black and one is white.
Fly away black, fly away white.
Come back black, come back white.
Two little songbirds flying in the sky.
One flying low and one flying high...
Two little songbirds flying through the clouds...
One is quiet and one is loud...
Source: Adapted by me
I took the traditional Two Little Blackbirds song and made it "songbirds" instead so that I could do the opposite colors of black and white along with all the other opposites presented in the song. Of course, I had to make cute little finger puppets to go with it!
