Flannelboard: Peas in a Pod

If I come up with more rhymes and songs to go with this set, the post will be updated to reflect that. If you have ideas for other ways to use the set, please share!

Flannelboard

This was the first flannelboard I made that I didn't give cute little faces to the pieces. I decided it might be a little morbid to have cute faces on the peas that I was having a rabbit eat. If you use a different rhyme, some adorable faces would be a fun addition to the peas in the pods! I used this for my peas storytime and my numbers and counting storytime.

Songs, Rhymes, Games, and Fingerplays

“Down in the Garden”

(Tune: "Down Around the Corner at the Bakery Shop)

Down around the corner in my garden so fine,
There are five little pea pods all on a vine.
Along comes a rabbit who wants something to munch.
He takes one pea pod and eats it for lunch!

Verses: Count down to one.

Source: I made this one up myself!

I combined this with a rabbit puppet we have and had the puppet take the peas off the board. This was a lot of fun and also meant I didn't have to make a rabbit felt piece to go with the song. It also helped discourage the kids from "helping" me take the felt pieces off the board since the rabbit needed to do it during the song. Sometimes helpers are great, but when the group is big and not everyone can help move a piece, it makes things difficult.

That darn rabbit stole all my peas!

  1. Ummm, these are so adorable (even without faces)! How did you make them? I think these would be a big hit at my Spring storytime.

    1. I start by drawing out a design on paper and then I trace each individual design element on a separate piece of paper using a light box. After that I cut out the pieces and then tape them down to the felt. You could also use freezer paper and iron them down and get much the same results. Then I cut out the pieces and glue all the layers together. Fair warning, all of my flannel boards take at least a couple hours to make, I think the quickest one I've made was an hour and a half, so only try for this kind of detail if you are willing to invest a decent chunk of time in it!
