Storytime: Soup

Books

Chicken Soup with Rice by Maurice Sendak
Soup Day by Melissa Iwai
Tiger in My Soup by Kashmira Sheth
Slop Goes the Soup by Pamela D. Edwards
Soup for One by Ethan Long
There’s a Giraffe in my Soup by Ross Burach

I may still be behind on getting my backlog of drafts up, but I'm going to start the year right with getting my first storytime of 2018 posted in a timely manner! January is National Soup Month so I thought that was a perfect theme to start off the year. With its rhyme for each month, Chicken Soup with Rice was a great book for both starting the year and to fit with the soup theme. My group loved the silliness of There's a Giraffe in My Soup. There were many giggles to be had at the ridiculous situations. I found a few soup related rhymes and activities which I have listed below, but I ended up only using the "Rainbow Stew" flannelboard. I didn't find either of the other songs and rhymes particularly compelling and decided to just use some of my standard shaker egg songs and ukulele song activity instead. Maybe they will inspire you more than they did me though!

Songs and Rhymes

Action Song: “Stir, Stir, Stir the Soup”

Stir, Stir, Stir the Soup
(To tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Stir, stir, stir the soup
Stir it all day long.
Add some (insert food name here),
Take a taste (slurrrp!)
Soup will make us strong. (flex arm)

Action Rhyme: “Stir the Soup”

Stir the soup in the pot
Boy it's really hot
Stir it fast, really fast
Stir it really, really slow.
Stir it high, stir it low
It's still hot, let's blow
Stir it fast like you should
I think it's done!
Mmmmmmmm! It's good!

Flannelboards and Fingerplays

Take an apple, put it in the pot.

Take it out now. What will it be? The prettiest red you ever did see!

Take an orange, put it in the pot.
Stir it, stir it, stir it a lot.
Take it out now. What will it be? The prettiest orange you ever did see!

Take a banana, put it in the pot.
Stir it, stir it, stir it a lot.
Take it out now. What will it be? The prettiest yellow you ever did see!

Take a pear, pit in the pot.
Stir it, stir it, stir it a lot.
Take it out now. What will it be? The prettiest green you ever did see!

Take some blueberries, put them in the pot.
Stir it, stir it, stir it a lot.
Take it out now. What will it be? The prettiest blue you ever did see!

Take some grapes, put them in the pot.
Stir it, stir it, stir it a lot.
Take it out now. What will it be? The prettiest purple you ever did see!

Take some cream, put it in the put
Stir it, stir it, stir it a lot.
Take it out now. What do you see? Two fluffy white clouds as happy as can be!

What did  we make with our rainbow stew?  A magical rainbow for me and you!
